Artists Statement

I have been a gardener for many years now, and get inspiration for my work from the natural world, appreciating the natural rhythms of Nature, and differing shapes and colours of each season.

I like to use crank clay, which has grog added to it, giving extra strength. It means that as well as being suitable to display inside, it can withstand outdoor temperatures too. It can also give the work added texture as it can be made rough or smooth, which I like to contrast in the same piece.

Much of my work comes as three separate pieces, making one composition. I find the balance of three very satisfying, and like to vary the compositions by either using the same glaze on all three, or by using different glazes. By using both gloss and matt glazes I find it helps to create variations of depth, tone and surface quality.

Technical information: Electric kiln firing using matt and gloss glazes. The work is fired in a range of 1190° to 1290°.
